The license question, answered.
Short answer first, because it's what you came for: to ride a motorcycle in Thailand as a foreign visitor on one of our trips, you need a valid motorcycle license from your home country plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Two documents. Both matter, and one of them trips people up more than the other.
The two documents, and why you need both
The first is your actual motorcycle license — the one your home country issued, with motorcycle privileges on it. A car license doesn't count for the motorcycle trips. The second is the IDP, and here's the part people get wrong: an IDP is not a license. It's a translation of the license you already hold, recognized internationally under the 1949 convention. It grants you nothing you don't already have. If your home license doesn't cover motorcycles, an IDP won't fix that.
Getting an IDP for Thailand
The good news is this is the easiest paperwork of the whole trip. You get an IDP from your home country's automobile association — in person or by mail, about 15 minutes of effort and roughly $20. Bring it with you and carry it with your license when you ride. Do it before you fly; you can't sort it out from Thailand.
Do Thai police actually check?
Yes. Thai police do check. I'm not going to invent statistics about how often — I don't have them — but this isn't a document you gamble on skipping. There's an insurance angle too: your travel insurance (required on every trip, non-negotiable) must specifically cover motorcycle riding, and many standard policies exclude it. Whether a policy would pay out if you were riding without the right license is a question to put directly to your insurer before you buy. Ask it.
The exception: Sri Lanka's tuk tuk trip
One trip in the lineup skips the motorcycle license entirely. On the Sri Lanka tuk tuk trip, no motorcycle license is needed — a regular driving license plus an IDP is all you need, and we help arrange the local Sri Lankan driving permit for you, up to two per tuk tuk. If the license requirement is what's been keeping you off a group trip, that's the door in.
Passport, visas, and the rest of the folder
Everyone, on every trip, needs a passport valid 6+ months beyond the trip dates. Check yours now — renewals take longer than you think. Visas are your responsibility: determine and obtain the right one for your nationality and destination. I handle the in-country meetup and the trip itself, not your visa.
